Day 62
9th February 2022
The Midnight Zone

What a beautiful sunny day for Ocean School today. ☀️
Today we learnt about the different zones of the ocean.
The sunlit zone which goes down to 200 meters. This is the ocean we know and love.
The twilight zone, 200-1000 meters. There’s no light here but sea life make their own light and have eyes the size of your head!
Scientists believe there are more fish living in the twilight zone than in the rest of the ocean put together.
Ever heard of marine snow? That’s the term used for dead animals and poo that float down to feed the sea creatures below. Tasty!!
Next is the midnight zone, 1000-3000 meters down. Home to angler fish & bioluminescent creatures. We love watching all the bioluminescent guys!
So alien like.
We went to see the bioluminescent algae last year in the bay. The kids loved it!

SCARY FACT! The cookiecutter shark is a shark found deep in the midnight zone. It takes bites out of its prey up to 4cm deep. Each night this shark SWIMS TO THE SURFACE looking for food!! 😱😱😱
This immediately puts an end to my night time ocean swims. 😬
The abys is 3000-6000 meters down, is totally black & near freezing. The creatures that live here have no eyes and are transparent!

The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean. It’s shaped like a crescent and is over 11 thousand meters deep and yep, creatures live there too.
Next, we did some breathing and we held our breath for 45 seconds.
Our instructor can hold his breath for over 4 minutes!! Far out!
After our chat, it was time to suit up and hit the water.

Walking Octopus!
When they got out, they were all super charged.
“We saw an octopus!” One little girl cried out.
“Yeh, it was walking on the sea grass.” Another said.
“It had coral on its head.” Mila continued.
“Its eyes were so big!” Said someone.
They were all so excited.
While they were out diving, we went swimming too. It was so gorgeous. What a great morning.
Afterwards, we continued to the park with some friends from ocean school and had lunch and played on the big spider web climbing thingy.
Oddly enough, when we got home the kids did maths!
You read correctly.
Maths! x
