Day 61

8th February 2022

What a Nightmare!

It was dark, when I suddenly felt the duvet pull off my shoulders, my hair pulled, an elbow pushed into my back, and then cuddled very tightly.

I knew it was one of them, but didn’t know which one until morning when I woke fully.

It was Lincoln.

He had a nightmare that he was attacked by a shark while surfing.

“Dad paddled over to save me. I punched it in the nose and it swam away.” Linc said.

So much for my sleep in. 😴

History

Today was the day I started with a ‘formal’ learning plan now that de-schooling is over.

A friend loaned me the book, The History of The World, and I thought that seemed like as good a place to start as any.

We snuggled on the sofa and I read the first 2 chapters. One chapter defined history and why it’s useful to us & the other was all about archaeology.

We watched a video where historians found Tutankhamen’s tomb.

They were really interested in this & I told them how I studied ancient history at school. 🤓

Morning Walk

We took Pepe for a walk to the store to buy fresh muffins and we contemplated the video we’d just seen.

We learnt that King Tut was a child king, probably walked with a cane and died when he was 19. This was probably because his mother and father were brother and sister.

‘Ew!!” They chorused.

Our discussions led to the fact that it’s illegal to marry your brother, sister, mother, father etc due to the gene pool being too closely related which can cause birth defects etc, etc, so ah, incest? Yes, we covered that. 😂

There were lots of questions about mummy’s, and how do they make mummy’s, and can we be made into a mummy in modern times?

When we got home, we returned to YouTube to get grossed out over lunch.

Below is the video we watched that should not be watched while eating a meal. 😂

The kids particularly grossed out when it got to the part that says the brain is removed via the nose with a long hook. 😱 (Could you imagine putting them through a Covid test after this video!)

Maths

After lunch we sat down to look at some maths programs.

Last year we started with Singapore Maths & I was reluctant to return to it, because they had put up such a fuss in the end.

They used to use the Maths app Prodigy at school and so I sat down and had a proper look at it. It’s a video game essentially (which I don’t like) and in order to cast a spell etc they have to answer a maths question.

I think it’s fun for when they have spare time, but I don’t think we will use only this. It’ll be a great motivator that’s for sure.

Capt. Rex

The plastering begins!

I was very impressed with the collaboration that went on!

I didn’t think he’d let her help him but he did.

Mila asked what she could do and he told her in great detail, and then they sat in the shade of the peach tree and plastered together.

After that, we had some TV time and then headed out to our last game of summer soccer.
