Day 55

31st January 2022

Rubik’s Cube

This is not a Rubik’s. (Cuber’s don’t compete with Rubik’s cubes, apparently). This is a speed cube.

Solving it, isn’t enough. You have to be fast too! 😄

I can’t believe the Christmas holidays are over already. They went so quickly!

We’re happy to be side stepping the compulsory 2 RAHT tests per week for children returning to school, as well as compulsory mask wearing.

Our kids would never cope. The masks would push them over the edge and can you imagine mornings, trying to shove a pipe cleaner up their nose. 😒

Poor little kids. I really feel for all of them.

So, term 1. Let’s do it!

Mila had a sleep over at Nanna’s and so she’s spending her time baking cupcakes and swimming in the river and driving Nanna’s golf buggy around the farm & generally being spoiled rotten.

Meanwhile, Linc got a Rubik’s Cube for Christmas the year before last and quickly became obsessed with it.

He learnt to solve it in just a few days, with the help of a YouTuber and then began looking at complex algorithms to solve it faster and faster.

After this, he got a speed cube. His best time was just under 1 minute.

Here is a link to a video from last year if you want to see him in action.

This morning, he found his cube while tidying up and spent the first 1-hour scrambling and then solving it.

Math’s day one of term, tick! ✔️

In winter they wear undies, in summer they wear winter pyjamas?? I don’t get it. 😕

Captain Rex

Lincoln’s been watching a lot of the Clone Wars recently, and he’s found this kid YouTuber who makes all kinds of Star Wars helmets and of course, sells templates.

(Pretty awesome business. $27.96 for an evergreen product that has a one time, very small, set up cost. Kids today, am I right?!)

You can check out the YouTube video here (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/Captain%20Rex) and follow the link to purchase a template.

Best $27.96 I ever spent!!

Lincoln is so into this craft project, and it’s really difficult at times. He’s had help from Dad and they love doing it together.

(Dad takes over a bit, and so Linc’s also learning patience & negotiation skills!) 😄

It’s made with cardboard and a hot glue gun and then covered in plaster, sanded & painted.

I love seeing Linc so engaged in this project. It’s making a hell of a mess, but it has lots of maths, engineering & creativity & so totally worth it. (Great bonding time with Dad too).

Can’t tell who’s enjoying this more.
Hot glue guns are hot! 🤕
It’s coming together! Almost time to plaster. He’s so pumped!!

Well, that was day one of first term.

We start back at ocean school and farm school this week too.

We have gymnastics & karate for sport. (And most probably skateboarding and surfing, as usual).

India & Japan for our geography subjects.

Decimals & geometry first up for maths, & Dads doing art.

The kids became really confident in the kitchen over the holidays with lots of cooking.

They’re learning and growing so much!

It’s going to be a great year! x
