Day 23
4th November 2021
269!
The outpouring of support for our home schooling, de schooling, un schooling journey has continued to flood in.
There is no way I could share them all here. Unfortunately.
269 comments so far!

I showed Liam.
What?!! We got married & didn’t get that many messages!
How special is that?
We’ve followed their links, watched the movies, the interviews, listened to the pod casts, heard their stories, and feel so confident in what we’re doing now.
I don’t doubt there will be challenging times ahead but the more we move into the invisible home school community, the more I feel right at home.
Home schooled children are so gentle. They’re calm. They can talk to adults, and they don’t seem afraid or nervous.
As we begin to open our eyes to ‘real life learning’ I’m beginning to see how these ‘teachable’ moments are everywhere.
This morning Liam was chopping mushrooms to throw on his toast and the packet said ‘Mushroom Medley’. Lincoln said, “What’s medley?”
We explained and used examples, and then they made up examples and that was that.
Medley.
I had no idea, we would teach them that this morning!
You know what else is working really well for us?
The Mrs Wordsmith product. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/Mrs%20Wordsmith)
Every day we flip to the new word. One of the kids reads it aloud.
We make sentences with the word.
They usually work it into a joke or something inappropriate, then on the back we read the synonyms and some other facts about the word and then we go about our day.
It only takes 5 minutes or so, it’s a quick thing, BUT we’ve noticed they always, at some point during the day use the word in a sentence!
Or they recognise the definition of the word being displayed, and then call out the word.
Like, the other day the word was grating, and Lincoln was singing something in a screechy high-pitched voice & we called him out as grating on our nerves.
They do things like that all the time with the word of the day.
Cool tool.

Skate Park
After breakfast, they hit the skatepark with Liam & Pepe and I got stuck into some work.
Watch a slow-motion ollie from Linc. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/Slo%20mo%20ollie)
I picked up the rubbish that was laying around the other day when we were there and so today, Mila took it upon herself to pick up the rubbish. Modelling 101! 😍😍
Palm Oil
We found a rogue Indonesian Yum that had fallen out of the box & made its way to the pantry.
One more yum!!
It was potato chips flavoured like nasi goreng. They tasted EXACTLY like nasi goreng.
We read the label and yep, palm oil is the second ingredient.
We’ve spoken to the kids before about palm oil. They know the horrendous effects this product has on the climate which is terraforming Indonesia & Malaysia.
Not to mention destroying the habitat of the Orangutans.
We made it our lunch time doco.

We talked about being respectful to the planet and that we can do this by limiting our waste, cooking from scratch, eating whole foods, staying away from the retail market as much as possible & just being aware of how we live.
Sigh.
So anyway, they learnt about that.
Skate Ramp
After lunch, Liam and Mila went on a grocery run and Linc stayed home with me.
Lincoln called Pa (who is a commercial builder) and told him about our skate ramp plans. Pa asked for a sketch, and you know what?
He drew one!
Really quickly too. Like 3 minutes, tops.

Mila knows heading out with Dad leads to the coffee shop where Dad has a bit of a chat, and she gets to eat café treats and draw on the cement.

Ooh, and some exciting news!
Linc entered his very first skating comp today!!
It’s at the end of January. He made a list of tricks he wants to master before then.
Exciting!!
Today was a nice cruisy day.
Mila read some of her dog book that came with her magazine.
We watched more hilarious Mark Rober videos and enjoyed a wet day inside.
I took a screenshot of this pic I saw today. It kind of highlights our life at the moment.
I’ll leave it here for anyone just starting out with home schooling.
