Day 157

1st August 2022

Sailing Rocks

The Sailing Rocks of Death Valley.

Today, I left for work at 6.30am. 😴 I was grumbling on the inside.

How could I let this happen?!

Liam and the kids watched some Physics Girl on YouTube and learnt about the Sailing Rocks.

There’s a 100-year mystery around these huge, heavy rocks that move across Death Valley, seemingly by themselves.

Two cousins, have finally solved the mystery!

When a fine sheet of ice forms after rain, the wind blows the ice ever so gently, to one end of the basin. The sheet ice act as a slide and it moves the rocks across the ice.

Check it out.

Surface Tension

https://youtu.be/WsksFbFZeeU

They stayed on Physics Girl, and later did and experiment on surface tension.

First, they learnt that the top layer of water molecules form a bond, and slightly bulge up a little.
When soap/detergent is added, the surface tension breaks and the water molecules want to flatten out.

There’s a cool experiment that demonstrates the water tension breaking and the water molecules shooting away from the soap.

Let’s see how they did.

Earth! 💗💗💗

They are covered in food colouring, of course – and so is the bathroom!

When I got home from work, there were friends in the garden, and the pizza oven was well underway.

All the kids were playing, and I took a glass of red and sat back in front of the fire, watching my pizza roast before my eyes.

Although it was an early start, it was a good day with a gorgeous end.

I am so tired now though. 😴😴😴

Sleep in tomorrow, yeh!!!
