Day 80

Philosophy

I drove through an ocean to get to my office this morning. (Very small exaggeration!)

The road was already underwater, and it was only 9am.

I rounded the corner, and wondered why on earth we had to turn up today, when I saw my dear sweet boss, drenched through & dripping with rain, waving his arms and signalling me to go home.

I gave him a sympathetic nod and turned around.

Home time!!

Yippeee!

I got back into my comfy pj’s, got back into bed and did the whole day from there while Liam bought me cups of tea and snacks! 😍😍😍

It was the best!!

Here I am in the middle of a Teams meeting, and no, I didn’t turn my camera on. Those camera meetings are beyond awkward.

So anyway, apart from being the ‘Curry King’ Liam is really into philosophy.

He’s read tonnes of books on the subject & has his own little philosophy club where he and his mate’s geek out on different ideas.

Today he began teaching philosophy to the kids.

We want them to be free thinkers. To question things and look for the why. To understand where modern thinking comes from and what influences it.

What influences people? Cultures?

We want them to be flexible and open to different ideas.

Is that too much to ask for? 😂

He’s reading from a great book called, What Do You Believe?

They learnt that Christianity rose to power as the Roman Empire was falling and people needed something to believe in.

They spoke about the state of the world today; how the capitalist model isn’t working for people.

Winners and losers. (Mostly losers).

How millions of people are sick, poor, stressed and on anti-depressants.

Liam asked them if a person like Jesus, showed up today preaching kindness, and acceptance with a new way of living, much different than today’s offering, what would that look like? What would they preach? Would people follow?

They discussed this and each took turns expressing their ideas.

Next it was maths, and then handwriting and then another of Liam’s favourite, art.

Today they learnt how to draw with a single focus point as the perspective.

First, they put a dot in the middle of the page, just above half way.

Then they drew a horizon at that point.

Then drew lines starting from the centre point and coming down towards the bottom of the page.

They used these lines to scale the size of the drawing, so that objects appear small towards the horizon and larger in the foreground.

If you look closely, you can see all the objects follow these strategically placed lines.

I was surprised at their tenacity with this task. It took a lot of focus ruling the lines and staying on task.

They were all very proud of their work.

Beautiful work Liam!

I finished work at 4pm and wandered out to take over with the kids.

Liam was headed out to see a band, and the kids and I ordered Pizza and watched a movie.

Great day.
