Day 92

23rd March 2022

Spit

Today I woke naturally.

No Linc crawling around on the floor looking for tech.

Instead, I came out to see these two playing the card game spit. (Who names these games?)

Then Liam’s first client was having a sleep in & so Liam had an extra hour up his sleeve. This could only mean one thing.

Pancakes!!

We sat around and had family breakfast, which is rare on a week day. It was so nice.

Liam left for work and then we went to Ocean School.

I don’t know how I did it this morning, but we were 20 min early!

Time kind of stood still.

I figured I’d go and get a Chai latte from the bakery and asked the kids if they wanted a pie?

Their eyes lit up!

“A pie? Now? For breakfast?” Lincoln quizzed.

“Sure.” I answered, feeling like the cool parent who allows meat pies for breakfast.

The excitement is real! 😁

Shark Egg

Today at Ocean School we talked about sharks.

We know a lot about sharks, thanks to Liam who’s a huge shark enthusiast, but we never tire of learning about them.

We always find Port Jackson shark eggs on the beach, and we decided to look up how on earth sharks lay these spikey eggs.

I imagine the sharks’ fins extending, so they can cover they eyes and grimace in pain.

I mean ouch, right?

Well, we found something even cooler!

We found a video of this man picking up a shark egg in the shallow water and he tears it open and there’s a shark inside!!

It was so cool! We will definitely be checking every egg we come across from now on. 🦈

We talked about how sharks are all around us in the ocean and we don’t even realise it.

There’s plenty of evidence that shows humans aren’t on a sharks’ menu & there are lots of things you can do to lower, the already low, risk of being bitten by a shark.

1. Don’t smell like pray – If there is a dead whale or seal in the water, don’t swim there. Don’t swim near lots of fishermen.

      2. Don’t thrash – If you see a shark, don’t start thrashing around looking like a wounded animal. Stay calm and move away slowly.

      3. Maintain eye contact – Sharks are ambush predators, so puff yourself up and keep turning in the water to maintain eye contact with the shark.

When we got home, we watched this cool drone video of sharks swimming peacefully with surfers.

It wasn’t the sunniest day, but they still had a really nice morning.

      Rainbow Keyboard

Lincoln’s been talking about a rainbow keyboard for ages and so today on our way home we stopped off to make the purchase with his birthday money.

Mila and I tried all the sofa’s & mentally shopped our hearts out, while Linc disappeared into the electronics sections.

He was SO impressed with this thing.

It is pretty cool. He ran me through all the light settings. I can see why he wanted it.

      Akeelah & The Bee

We don’t usually do core work in the afternoon and so we watched a movie.

Today we watched Akeelah & The Bee. It’s an old film from 2006 with Laurence Fishburne about a young black girl from a poor neighbourhood with an academic gift, who enters a spelling bee.

There were so many wonderful themes in this movie & we afterwards, we chatted about many of them.

Here’s the trailer if you want to check it out. It’s on YouTube. The kids kept trying to spell the words with the kids on stage.

I wonder if either of them will be inspired to enter a spelling bee. Hmmmm.

      Thai No Fishcakes

      I didn’t feel like cooking.

I was telling Liam, I have no motivation for cooking, or doing anything. 😒

      Like, it’s all too hard!

Even though he’d been at work all day, he whipped up some fishcakes with a cress salad & I was so happy to not be eating vegemite toast which was what I was contemplating. 😍😍

I had an email from a friend today who sympathised with my ‘meh-ness’ and promised a huge hug when she comes out of Covid lockdown. (Everyone we know has Covid!)

I don’t feel sick with Covid anymore, but there is a flatness that follows and she agreed she feels it too.

It made me feel a lot better. 🤗🤗🤗

The Challenge: Home school for 1 year while not losing sanity or love for children and/or husband.

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

      Kindly, Lisa x

      Can we be friends?!
