Day 78

3rd March 2022

Beautiful English

The Good & The Beautiful (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/Good%20&%20Beautiful)

We started early this morning because I had to work from home and Liam was going to be out.

So, at 8am this morning Mila and I sat at the table munching on avocado toast and looking at this beautiful painting.

This was her English lesson.

First, we discussed the painting, the colours, the light and what we thought was happening in the picture, and then we had to find the nouns.

She pointed out the mountains, the man, the trees & the workers.

The we had to make them proper nouns by giving them names and then we had to write adjectives about the nouns.

What a lovely way to teach English.

Rather than just looking at words in a sentence and being asked to underline the nouns & adjectives. Mila was asked to pluck out the nouns from a beautiful painting and then used her imagination to add rich adjectives.

Her sentences were gorgeous.

I know I go on about this product a lot but, The Good & The Beautiful really is a beautiful and thoughtful curriculum that’s just full of art. If you are considering a tangible curriculum, I recommend this one.

We did the same exercise with this painting. After we added adjectives, the painting came to life in a whole new way.
Note the crop top & belly button. 😂 Apparently when you’re 8, all you want is a crop top!

The picture above is from her Good & Beautiful writing book. At the end of each page is an art exercise.

This is what she drew today.

The Brain

I loaned this great book about the human body from the library and today we learnt about the brain.

We learnt about left and right side, the different functions and then we played a game where I covered a series of random objects with a towel, they had 10 seconds to look at them and then they had 20 seconds to write down as many things as they could remember.

They loved doing this!

Mila won this one and was pretty chuffed with herself.

Then they tested me with a new range of objects and I only missed 3 from 14! My baby brain has finally left me. 😂 (I mean, I think. Am I supposed to get them all? 😬)

Give it a try. Look for 10 seconds and then look away and see what you remembered. You gotta beat 11. 😉

Tinker Crate

After lunch we opened our tinker crate and today we learnt about automation.

I didn’t have time to sit with them because of a work crisis, so I left them alone with it.

First, I divided up the steps so there would be no fighting over who’s turn it was.

There was fighting. 😂

Not too much though.

This is what they made.

Watch Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQP4lmFwyEs

I forgot to take a video! This is Liam turning the crank. I missed their excitement & chatter about their machine. ☹️

After that they watched some TV and then I took them to the pool.

Me and my big mouth a few weeks ago saying how I love a slow rainy day after lots of hot days. 🙄

I’m sorry!

I take it back!

Can you stop the rain now please!

The Challenge: Home school for 1 year while not losing sanity or love for children and/or husband.

Home School Days: 200

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
