Day 178

30th August 2022

Bed Schooling

Me, at 7.30am this morning.

Firstly, how hilarious is the picture above?!

I was looking for a quick pic to illustrate how poorly I felt this morning, and Google threw this little gem at me. This is an actual portrait of a woman on her death bed, hundreds of years ago.

Death bed portraits were a thing! The ultimate insult, right?

I realise I’m only adding to this poor woman’s anguish but the likeness was uncanny! πŸ˜‚Mila lay at the end of the bed and this was me as we ran though math mentals. 😫

So anyway, I felt really unwell Monday afternoon and by dinner time was laying there like a drunk person unable to move or swallow.

The kids made themselves scrambled eggs on toast (Liam was working late) and pretty much put themselves to bed. 😞

Before that we did get quite a bit done.

The Minotaur

In history we learnt about King Minos and the Minotaur he kept in a maze under his palace.

King Minos, ordered the neighbouring city of Athens, to sacrifice7 boys and 7 girls each year, to be fed to his Minotaur and in return, he would not attack their city.

Athens had no choice but to agree.

When the King of Athens’ son Theseus turned 18, he saw mothers & fathers weeping by the sea and asked what was the matter. When he learned of the yearly sacrifice he was outraged and insisted he board the boat to slay the Minotaur.

The Athenian King pleaded with Theseus not to go, but apparently, even Greek mythological teens are defiant!

When Theseus arrived to Crete, King Minos greeted them along with his daughter Ariadne who instantly fell in love with Theseus.

Later, Ariadne snuck into Theseus’ cell and gave him a ball of string, a torch and a sword, to slay the Minotaur.

So, Theseus slays the Minotaur, and returns home to Athens on the boat with the others. However, he forgot to change the sails from black to white, as a way to signal his father of his success or his death. Upon seeing the black sails on the horizon, Theseus’ father threw himself off a cliff and died.

So, a bit of a tragedy in the end.

Afterwards, we each drew a Minotaur.

Lincoln drew a doodle, of course. πŸ™„ I suggested a loin cloth might have been more accurate. πŸ˜‚
Mila’s Minotaur was very sorry and was only doing what he had to do to survive. 😍😍😍 He’s also wearing underpants. πŸ˜‚

My Minotaur has 6 fingers on one hand, and looks like he’s doing jazz hands. (All those dance lesson’s finally paying off!)

Then went to the dog park where we played with our friends’ dog, Diego.

Today the kids did the grocery shop all by themselves while I sat in the car.

They were so stoked to go in by themselves. They got everything on the list and didn’t buy anything extra! I was certain a tub of ice-cream or something would have slipped into the trolley, but no. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Later, Linc made a batch of choc chip cookies and Mila made brownies and then somehow, I made it through drama and basketball and cooked mama’s famous creamy pasta and blogged.

Time for rest. 😴

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
