Day 164

10th August 2022

The Truman Show

Watch Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlnmQbPGuls

The last 2 days have been slow.

I attempted our usual routine but only got as far as history when I realised, this isn’t happening today.

They were still on a high from their weekend away, and as they weren’t together, they chattered constantly about their time away.

“We’re finished for the day!” I declared at 9amish.

“Huh?” They grunted, like teen neanderthals.

“Let’s watch a movie.” I said, quickly making a pivot.

This went down a treat and I had their attention immediately.

I chose The Truman Show from the menu, and they loved the concept and both agreed.

It was definitely a Butcher record, for shortest time deciding on a movie!

They both enjoyed it, with lots of interjections along the way.

“Does the wife have to have sex with him?” Mila asked.

“Uh, yes I guess so.” I replied.

“This should be illegal! A company can’t adopt a baby!” Lincoln protested.

Afterwards, we fell naturally into a discussion on ethics and philosophy.

Are we in control of our lives?

Could we see The Truman Show pattern, happening in our own lives?

“Yes, with society.” Mila said.

“That’s right!” I said. (Clever girl).

We talked about the subtle, and not so subtle, pressure from society to live a certain way, look a certain way, and the status that’s attached to these choices.

They may have been tired & didn’t want to do any ‘work’, but in the end mama won.

Ethics. ✅

Philosophy. ✅

At The House

Mila picked up a snotty flu thing while we were away and so it was nice to just hang at the house and ease back into learning.

Lego has continued to be a huge hit, with Mila’s ‘fun park’ growing and growing!

While we were out doing the grocery shop, I came across an activity box on the human body and with motivation low at the moment I thought, yep that’s us!

It came with a little skeleton model they had to put together, along with quite a thick book of facts, activities and quizzes.

They really enjoyed it!

Mila did the first activity, and we went over the first few pages.

Damn that center isle at Aldi, it got me!!

Oh my goodness, they are so good at following written instruction booklets. They could start a business putting together peoples flat packs!

I think they’ve called him Bob. 😂

We also came across some mini canvas’.

They were too cute not to buy! At some point, we sat down and did a little art.

Linc drew a pic of Pepe with led pencil and then went over it with watercolours.

I did a Bob Ross landscape and Mila didn’t finish hers, as the school came out, and she ran outside, to see a friend.

They look so cute on our wall!!

Core

We did a tiny bit of core today.

Linc is writing an essay on Peru and Mila is researching Europe.

While I was working on English with one child, I put the other on the sofa with a times table app.

They are really starting to nail their times tables!!

Especially Linc, he’s up to his twelves!

The Beach

Nice day for it!

After this we called it quits and took sushi to the beach.

It was such a beautiful day. It makes me ache for summer!

There was no wind, and the sun was warm. ☀️☀️☀️

We checked all the shark eggs for baby Port Jackson sharks, built a sandcastle, collected mother-of-pearl shells (Mila’s favourite) and chatted.

Then we decided it was an ice-cream day, and ambled along the footpath to the ice-creamery where there was NO LINE!

Home school for the win. 😎

Later, Linc played basketball, and Mila ran wild with the other basketball siblings.

It was such a close game 20-21!

Nail biter!

At dinner we got a call from Dad and heard all about his adventures at the snow.

It’s been a really nice few days.

Gymnastics tomorrow! 🤩🤩🤩

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
