Day 140

15th June 2022

Hatshepsut

Queen of Egypt

We had a slow lazy morning today.

I slept in and when I woke the kids were watching The Floor Is Lava. πŸ˜‚

They love that show!

After the team ‘Dad Bods’ beat the team ‘Mum’s of Steel’ to the top of Lava Lamp Mountain, I turned off the TV and we started with history.

Today we learnt about the first female pharaoh of Egypt. I remember learning about her in my senior year at school.

Hatshepsut married her half-brother who was pharaoh, as you do. 🀒

He died soon after and her stepson was due to be king but as he was an infant she took over as his regent until he was old enough to rule in his own right.

Of course, she didn’t give up the throne and went on to successfully rule for 20 years.

She fought hard for the Egyptian people to accept her as pharaoh, as women didn’t hold positions of power.

Hatshepsut began dressing like a man and even wearing a beard! (The kids loved this!).

Years after her death someone tried to chisel her out of history.

Some historians believe it was her stepson and others believe it was the people of Egypt who wanted to erase the memory of a female leader in Egypt.

After history, we completed English and played some Math’s games online.

There was a little grumbling, but not too much.

I made snacks and all was well. πŸ˜‚

The Rescue

They were a bit lazy and restless today, so I put a documentary on.

We ended up watching The Rescue, which is the story of 13 boys rescued from a cave in Thailand back in 2018.

I wasn’t sure if it was the right choice, but we want them to know they live in a big world with lots happening all the time, and that they are a small part, of a really big thing.

Anyway, I chose it.

It was so good!!

They came and went a bit during the beginning but once they started the rescue, we all sat their glued to the spot.

At the end I bawled & held them close and told them how lucky we were to have each other and to be safe.

I’m pretty sure they eyerolled the whole way through that moment. πŸ™„

What an incredible display of the human spirit!!

If you haven’t seen it, check it out. Here’s the trailer.

Birthday Surprise

Mila went to check the mail and found a birthday present at the front door!

Squeals of delight burst out of her, and she ran back inside and threw herself on the sofa.

Paper flew left & right.

Inside, were an adorable pair of spotty rainbow socks and a little teddy that clings on for dear life, and a pen set.

She loved them, and the socks went on right away. πŸ˜‚

Doughnuts

Ok, by now it was 1pm, and I still hadn’t taken Mila back to the park to look for Skye, the lost Squishmallow.

If we waited any longer, school would be out and we’d be faced with hordes of kids.

Now that we’re spoilt home schoolers, we’re not too keen on sharing public facilities! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I know what you’re thinking and yes, I knew that Skye was not going to be there, however a promise is a promise.

We stopped off at the doughnut van to grab some insurance, and then we headed to the park.

We searched everywhere but no Skye. 😒

The hot cinnamon doughnuts helped with this. 😏

And oh my goodness, she managed get the top out of the laundry basket & wear it again!!! It’s so grubby! I have to go and grab it right now while she’s asleep!

We learnt about centrifugal force from one of our science crates, so I guess we can tick off physics with this video. πŸ€”

Physics in motion.

Afterwards, we came home for some quiet time.

Linc read for a while & Mila played on the laptop while I did some work.

At 4pm our house turned into a bit of a zoo with kids from all over the neighbourhood coming and going.

I counted 6 kids at one point!

Of all ages.

That’s not including our 2.

We always wanted to be the house all the kids came too for parties & to hang out & I really saw that starting to happen today.

There were kids everywhere!

They were bouncing on the tramp, playing with the dog, downstairs on the tools, playing Shopkins in the bedroom & stopping now & then to entertain me with their stories.

It was so adorable. 😍

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
