Day 131

1st June 2022

Create

Our kids love to create!

This morning, after a gnarly dream, I was in a bit of a daze while making my smoothy and so I didn’t realise that Lincoln & Mila had already started the day.

Lincoln was drawing a template for a tool he wanted to make, and Mila was making blue sugar balls. (?)

This is the remaining mixture from the sugar crystal lollipops, which is now being repurposed as ‘blue sugar balls’. 😂

Rice Terrace

Rice Terrace, China.

When the sugar balls were in the fridge, I began reading from our World History book.

We learnt that in ancient China, most people were farmers. They grew a type of grain that people in Egypt & Mesopotamia couldn’t grow.

Rice.

Rice will only grow where the ground is very wet for most of the year.

The ground near the Yellow River, in China, stayed wet for months and months & rice could grow here.

We learnt how the Chinese grew rice on terraces, as the countryside was very mountainous.

We went to YouTube for a closer look.

They loved the design and beauty of the terraces and we learnt that most Chinese farmers make their money from the tourists who come to see the rice terraces.

We also saw rice terraces when we went to Bali, a few years ago.

Scavenger Hunters

Next, we got dressed for the day and headed out to find steel for Lincolns project and Mila wanted clothes for her Koala. 🙄 (She has two teddies both dressed in organic cotton onesies!)

I walked past Mila’s room and saw her putting on her clip-on earrings & couldn’t resist capturing the moment.

Little sweetheart.

We only needed a little bit of steel, so we went to the tip for a good rummage through the buy back.

But it was closed. 😣

So, we went to Bunnings, but they only had very thin steel sheeting, and this wasn’t thick enough, Linc said.

Next it was off to an actual steel supplier & guess what? We bought steel! 😂

It’s 10mil thick and a meter long, by say 15cm.

Linc is so stoked! He’s headed to Nana & Pa’s for a sleepover this weekend and Pa’s going to help him cut it with an angle grinder.

At the charity shop, we found lots of clothes for Mila’s bear.

Charity shops & garage sales are our favourite!

Onesie, hoodie and beanie. This is warmest Koala alive.

At Bunnings, she found a box for a bed and safely escorted him down the escalator. 😂

After that it was home time, to do, whatever.

We watched the rest of Obi Wan Kenobi and Pepe sat with us on the sofa.

He never does this!

He’s so polite, we’ve tried coaxing him up for cuddles with treats but nope, he never gets on the sofa.

Sometimes we find him there in the morning when we wake up, but he quickly moves off.

Lincoln decided he wanted to make Bombe Alaska (which is in the science book) and so he got started on that, while I did a few jobs online & Mila watched Mrs Doubtfire.

Tomorrow, I start my new job.

Eeeek!

Making the ice-cream mold for the Bombe Alaska.
Cake made. Meringue tomorrow.

The Challenge: Home school for 1 year while not losing sanity or love for children and/or husband.
Contenders: Mila 8yrs, Lincoln 10 yrs, Me (Mum), Liam (Dad), Pepe (dog)
Home School Days: 200

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
