Day 126

25th May 2022

Clean Up

Today started with a clean-up.

Lately they don’t feel like ANY book work so we’re taking a break.

Mila & her friends have had so many fashion shows, her bedroom floor has been littered with clothes for days.

Lincoln’s room isn’t so bad, so I was surprised to see him go at it with gusto vacuuming and cleaning the windows!

The Silkworm

When we finished cleaning, we flopped on the sofa for a rest and I read from our world history book.

Today was all about ancient China.

We learnt how the empress Lei Zu was taking tea in her garden under a Mulberry tree when a silkworm cocoon fell into her tea.

She noticed the hot water began to unravel the cocoon into a long silvery thread that stretched on and on.

Lei Zu had the thread woven into cloth and made the emperor, the very first, silkworm thread, robe.

After our story we went to YouTube to learn more about silkworms, and we watched this awesome video.

The kids want to raise silkworms. You can buy eggs online for around $25.

Pizza Oven

After history, we took Pepe for a walk to the shops to get supplies for our pizza dough.

(His lead’s in the other car so we tied him to an old piece of rope. It looks like we just found him on the street and abducted him!)

Lincoln found a gluten free pizza recipe, and we got to work.

It was messy work!

We left the dough to rest, and when we came back, the kids loved seeing how much it had risen.

Next, it was time to head to the hardware store for our bricks & pavers.

Yesterday, we started with some small pavers that we already had, but today, we realised the width wouldn’t work; we needed the narrow bricks.

There was a young guy at the hardware store, maybe 18 or 19yrs, who loaded the bricks into the car and the kids decided to be helpful & passed him the bricks in a chain, one by one! 😂

They really slowed him down, but they were excited to help, and he was so polite and patient with them.

There was a bit of a wait before the brick guy came with his forklift. Mila was losing her patience. 😂

We got home and started building.

We went to put the paver on top, and realised our paver was a little smaller than the one from the YouTube video.

Ours was 19 inches and there’s was 24 inches! Oops.

We altered our build and kept going.

All the wood we had was wet, so I had to spend $28 at the servo just for wood. The injustice!
Lincy making sure we were all square.
All finished!!

Behold!

The pizza oven!! 😋

They were so proud!

“This is the best day.” Linc said. 😉

We couldn’t find our laser thermometer and so we just waited until the fire was really going then we threw a pizza in.

It was SO GOOD!

It probably took around 20 minutes.

The base was crunchy, but the dough was soft and fresh.

Not doughy though, it was just right, and it had the right amount of smokiness.

Delish!

The kids negotiated Nutella and marshmallows to make a sweet pizza.

This was the first time they’d had Nutella!!

They were in chocolate heaven!

Lincoln wrapped his up like a cinnamon scroll and Mila made a mini pizza with one marshmallow on top.

We sat around together, eating pizza, drinking wine (us not them) and feeling so proud of our accomplishment.

If you’re keen to make one of these little ovens, the cost of 50 bricks and two 500 x 500 pavers was just $117.

We built it in 20 minutes, with no mud sealing or fussing, and were cooking pizzas the same evening.

Total win.

The Challenge: Home school for 1 year while not losing sanity or love for children and/or husband.
Contenders: Mila 8yrs, Lincoln 10 yrs, Me (Mum), Liam (Dad), Pepe (dog)

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
