Day 109

2nd May 2022

Stacks On!

Poor Liam hadn’t even gotten out of bed this morning before the kids rushed at him calling out ‘stacks on Dad!’

I was just delivering his tea in bed & so I had my camera at the ready. 😏

Monday is a workday for me so I finished my porridge, kissed everyone goodbye and ran out the door.

When I got home, this is what I found out.

River Walk

First, they took a walk through the bush to the river.

When I was a kid, we used to jump off a rock called Big Red, all summer long.

I grew up on the other side of this river. One time I famously swam across it, holding my white Sportsgirl makeup bag over my head so as not to get it wet, while dodging speed boats, just so I could go to the movies with my bestie.

Totally worth it.

Imagine missing this because you were stuck in a classroom.

Math’s

Apparently, math’s is way more fun when writing with your toes!

“You two make a start, while I peg out the laundry and I’ll be back in a minute.” Liam said.

When he came back. This is what he found.

Vortex Power

Our tinker crate arrived and so after Math’s, they were excited to open it up.

Vortex power!

Both the kids love tornados, especially Lincoln.

Did you know that hurricanes can reach up to the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere?

Well, they can! Up to 50,000 feet!

They learnt that air travelling in a vortex can travel for hundreds of kilometres because their motion is stable.

Unlike a puff of air that you might use to blow out birthday candles which is unstable. After just a few inches it will fall apart and disperse.

After reading the booklet, they got to built an air canon & a target stand.

Reading, comprehension, following instructions, problem solving, teamwork, math’s, science & creativity. Not a bad 40 minutes!

They had to try to blow the targets down by blowing air from their mouth. They couldn’t do it. Too unstable.

Next, they had fun using their air canons to create vortex power and send the air directly to the target knocking them down.

Boom!

Lastly, they did a cool experiment where they held the air canon over the smoke cone and then flicked the back end to see the smoke move out in vortex rings.

They were supposed to do it in the dark with a torch, so you can’t really see the smoke in the video. We’ll try it again tomorrow and I’ll post it up.

Katana

After lunch, Linc and Liam went downstairs to work on the Katana and Mila cleaned her room.

I took her shopping on the weekend for some new things for winter and after a LENGTHY fashion show, which featured all the items purchased and then various combinations, her room was trashed.

Again.

Tomorrow is park day with our friends.

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
