Day 97

30th March 2022

Dragons

Today at Ocean School we were asked the question,

“Do you believe in dragons?”

Some said yes, some said no.

We read a book about the weedy dragon which is found in the southern parts of Australia at depths of up to 50 meters.

They are very hard to see because they can camouflage so well in the seaweed.

The colour of a weedy dragon depends on where they live.

In Tasmania seadragons are reddish with deep blue, purple and yellow.

In other waters their main colour is yellow.

They live for around 7 years.

Mila piped up at this point with,

“I would have already been married and had babies!” 😂

Unlike most other sea animals, male seadragons are the ones who become pregnant, incubate and hatch eggs.

(The mums liked this one!)

Lara had brought in a weedy dragon’s skeleton, and we passed it around and imagined what it would have looked like with all its ‘weedy’ like appendages.

After our chat, it was time to hit the water.

Today was a bit different, with the kids being put through their paces with a free-dive triathlon.

They had to do their breath holds while doing 10 star-jumps!

Then, run into the water and swim out to the buoy and back.

Finally, they had to do a series of lunges along the beach and then run back to the circle.

I was so proud of Mila for competing. She really enjoyed it.

Lincoln took a wander along the beach with another diver looking for Port Jackson shark eggs, desperate to find one with a shark still inside.

They didn’t find one, but they did find lots of eggs.

No shark in this one. 😒
Sea Urchin – So pretty!! Even though the warming of the sea is bringing them further south and eating all the weedy seadragons’ habitat. 😢
Not a bad spot for marine biology class. 💗

Lino Printing

Tomorrow, Liam is taking them to a friend’s place to do some lino printing.

My job today, was to make sure they had completed their drawing.

We looked up lino printing to understand what we were doing and then looked for some inspiration.

Pepe taught this class. 😎

Seeing as Lincoln is half dog, he chose a wolf.

He took inspiration from a picture he found online and drew his wolf freehand.

I love the ‘Banksyness’ of this!

I can’t wait to see how they turn out.

Mila is half cat and so naturally, she chose a cat.

She says she’s not happy with it yet and is playing around with perhaps putting in a background.

She says she’s thinking of a stripy tail.

Mila didn’t press as hard with her pencil, so it’s a bit tricky to see.

After art class, they had their scheduled 1 hour of computer time which gave me a block of free time and my beautiful friend came over for a cuppa.

Soooo nice to see her!!

And that wraps up another day of home-school. 😁

The Challenge: Home school for 1 year while not losing sanity or love for children and/or husband.
Contenders: Mila 8yrs, Lincoln 10 yrs, Me (Mum), Liam (Dad), Pepe (dog)

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
