Molly’s Game
The stars have aligned! Liam and I are headed out on a date night!
The last time we did this I broke my jaw in 2 places, & my ear canal, split my chin open to the muscle and knocked out a few back teeth.
Am I nervous about tonight?
A little.
Tonight, we’re headed out to a poker game. Only 2 nights ago we watched Molly’s Game on Netflix.
It was so good; you should watch it.

Well, I didn’t win last night. 😒 But I did win the first 4 or 5 rounds and was the ‘chip leader’ for a good hour. 😎

Ok, on to our day yesterday.
It started with the card game ‘spit’. They are loving this lately.
Essay Writing
I started with Mila at the table for English/Arts while Lincoln played Math’s games on the laptop.
Mila learnt to write an essay today.
She wrote the opening paragraph, followed by 3 ideas written as paragraphs and then a closing paragraph that tied it all together. (Not her own paragraphs, today she was learning by copying the example and cutting & pasting).
Her essay was on Austria.
She quickly ran to get the map to see where Austria was and then proudly read out her essay to Linc & I.
Bloxorz
The kids have come across a math’s game called Bloxorz.
They have to flip the block, without if falling off the grid so that it falls into the square hole. The levels get harder and harder.
They play this for AGES and its less ‘gamey’ than other Math’s apps.
Hammurabi’s Code
Today in history we learnt about Hammurabi who was the king of Babylonia (Southern Mesopotamia) and how he didn’t want people to obey him because of his strong army but be governed by, just laws.
He says his job as king is “to make justice appear in the land, to destroy the evil and the wicked so that the strong might not oppress the weak.”
What a legend!!
Hammurabi wrote down the laws he thought were fair and carved them in stone.
These laws are called the code of Hammurabi.
They are the first set of laws that we know of.
As we read through the laws we discussed if we thought they were fair by today’s standards.
So, history ended up crossing over with ethics & philosophy. 😂
We must have discussed the laws for 45 minutes. The kids were so engaged and animated it in their reasoning.
One of the laws states:
If a builder builds a house, and that house collapses and kills the owner, the builder will be put to death.
Mila thought being put to death was harsh, but that maybe they should just collapse the builders house instead. 😂
This led us to discuss the phrase an ‘eye for an eye’ and how this argument is still alive in our society today.
Here’s was another:
If a robber is caught breaking a hole into a house so that he can get in and steal, he will be put to death in front of the hole.
They again agreed that being put to death was harsh but, he should go to jail.
I made up a back story about the man’s wife being so sick she couldn’t go to work, and their family couldn’t survive on one income alone, and that the man had robbed a wealthy home in order to steal some food for his family until his wife had recovered, and could return to work.
How did they feel about the robber now?
Is this a social issue? Is this person evil? Would this person have stolen if they weren’t hungry?
When does a primal need come before society’s expectations?
Our discussions led to the society needing to be fairer so that everyone had a basic standard of living and that the king could do this with his laws.
Linc thought that the wealthy could donate some of their food to the poor, so they didn’t have to steal.
Mila thought this would lead to greed. Why would some work hard when they could get food for free?
Big questions!
