Day 66

15th February 2022

Nomads to Cities

We had a big day at the park planned for 9.30am but first, we kicked off the day with some history.

Today we learnt how the nomads began settling close to a water source, which brought their food to them, in turn saving them lots of time and offering different kinds of food.

As the villages became bigger & they began to trade their wares they built walls around the village for protection against thieves.

Our book talked about the walls of Jericho which were 10 feet thick and 30 feet high!! 😲

Park Life

Ah, not lonely or unsocialised. I’m always amazed when people say to us, ‘Aren’t you worried they won’t be socialised?” Here they are about to start a game of tips. 5 seconds after this pic they scattered like marbles.

We spent the morning playing at the park.

It’s funny, when we’re alone and it’s just me and the kids’ people don’t pay much attention. They probably assume we have the dentist or something.

But when we’re in a group like this, people stare.

They probably know we’re a home-school group, but they always have a look on their face like they’re wondering why we’re at the park and not at home doing ‘work’.

What they don’t realise is that all these kids are ahead. Home schooled kids are way ahead. They have to spend more time at the park or they’d graduate the whole thing in just a few years.

That’s how much time is wasted at school.

So much time.

(Makes you wonder why they give out homework when they have them ALL DAY!)

Anyway, we had such a nice morning. I loved talking to all the mamas and learnt about a new English resource for the kids.

I’m sure I’m the last person on earth to hear about this but today I learnt about Wordle!

You have to guess a secret word in 6 tries. Each guess must be a valid 5 letter word. After each guess the tiles light up to say if you got a letter right and if it was in the correct position.

It’s kinda like hang man only without the torture, and you know, death.

My favourite part is that the whole world gets the same word.

We start tomorrow!

Climbing up the slide is always just as fun as sliding down.

Through the rope maze is the only way to get to the big slide.

Mila’s favourite.

Solar Boat

After the park we came home for lunch. The kids made veggie burgers and we did some maths work.

Not long into maths our friend Chris stopped by and bought the kids an engineering project.

They built the engine and then made the boat and then took it out into the sun to try it out.

Lincoln got such a kick out of covering the solar panel with his hand and watching the engine cut out.

This led to a chat on clean renewable energy and how the sun has enough energy to power the world!

For free!!

Playdates

At 3pm we’d finished our day and collected a couple of friends from regular school for some trampoline, soap & hose fun. 😂

It was giggle, giggle, giggle for 2 hours before we went to Linc’s semi-finals soccer game.

First, they lather. Then they slip slide and laugh like wild hyenas. 😂

It was such a CLOSE game today, and so exciting to watch.

Linc scored 3 goals and ran his tiny heart out. âš½

He was gutted when they lost by one point, but they all played so well.

After that it was home to finish our Universal Yum’s box.

Tonight, was the last Yum. It was chocolate covered ginger biscuits.

Heaven. x

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
