Day 8

GRAFFITI ART – Let Them Spray!

Last year we bought a fixer-upper & have joined the ranks of DIYers across the country, schlepping out to Bunnings on Saturday’s to purchase paint & supplies etc. We love it!

Our back fence needs replacing and so what better place to start our spray paint adventure, than in our own backyard.

In our home school learning, we’ve been talking about Tiddalick the frog (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/Tiddalick) from the Aboriginal Dreamtime story and we thought, he would look pretty good right about there, on the back fence!

When we bought the spray cans, Lincoln made a joke that it was ok for him to purchase a cross bow, but it was illegal for him to purchase a can of spray paint. 😂

Smart kid.

It was fun, fun, fun!!!

We first had to try out our spray style.

Apparently, our frog faces are excellent!

Now we have our very own Tiddalick, we have spoken about putting a slide in front of Tiddalick’s mouth and sliding down onto a slip and slide!

There was also talk about putting in a frog pond! Anything goes at home school.

We’ll keep you posted on that.

Oh, and you know how you think your kids are never listening or paying attention?

This was their graffiti art.

RIP

Wonder where they got that from?

Chasing Waterfalls

Liam had planned to take them to a waterfall today, so last night the kids & I agreed to do a little Maths & English in the morning & then after art, they would be free to take off with Dad for the rest of the day.

This was perfect for me as I was working from home and had to tick off a tonne of stuff around the house.

I didn’t get an update all day, and then I finally heard them pull up around 7pm.

They got lost.

There was no waterfall.

They looked shattered.

They collapsed at the table and told me the story.

“What happened?” I asked.

“We must have walked for 3 hours.” Liam said. “Through thick bush, good enough for a kangaroo.”

Lincoln pipes up, “It was scratching our face!”

Mila “We all got squelch foot” (That’s our name for when someone walks in a deep puddle and has a squelchy wet sock, for the rest of the day.)

Mila said, “I was so wet, I didn’t even bother walking around the puddles.”

Liam, “And there were hundreds of leeches!” He pulled up his shorts and his legs were streaked with blood. (Eww)

He said, “I must have gotten no fewer than 30 leeches. Linc too, he got smashed!”

I said “What went wrong?”

He said, they walked down a road for what seemed like hours & they lost phone signal, so no maps.

Then someone said, “This looks like a track here.”

They followed the scrappy bush track to nowhere for another hour, at least. (Mila says.)

I said, “When did you realise you had gone the wrong way?”

“I think we all knew deep down.” Liam said. (Haha)

Lincoln said, “We walked for 15 kilometres through treacherous, heart breaking bush. I was scratched by over 300 different bushes!”

It was so funny hearing them tell the story. Their tired little faces.

Liam said the kids were great. Linc was a little disappointed but they got on with it, & finally made the trek back to the car.

No waterfall today. 😥

They were promised this…

Home School Win

I chalk this up to an epic win. Lots of resilience, always prepare, don’t rely on technology, not knowing when you will make your way back has gotta be what, tenacity? Working as a team. A shared experience. A funny story.

Experiences with leeches! 😂😂😂

I also really like the fact that this was a motley crew of:

  • A 7 year old.
  • An 8 year old.
  • A 10 year old.
  • Two 18 year olds.
  • A 23 year old.
  • Two dads.

“Home school kids hang out with people of all ages. They learn from lots of different people.”

In regular school, they tend to only hang out with kids their exact age. There isn’t even a lot of cross over between the years.

Watching a couple of 18 year olds, goof off and mess around while lost in the wet and the fog is good role modelling for younger kids. They learn so much from that.

They all had fun, just being lost together.

The Challenge: Home school for 1 year while not losing sanity or love for children and/or husband.
Contenders: Mila 8yrs, Lincoln 10 yrs, Me (Mum), Liam (Dad), Pepe (dog)

This blog was inspired by the film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep & Amy Adams.

Julie decides she will take her love of cooking to the next level by cooking every recipe in Julia Childs French cookbook, in one year! 500 & something fancy, technical recipes!! While working full time!

Julie writes a daily blog about her time in the kitchen for herself & other amateur cooks who may, or may not be, reading along. You gotta watch it (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/about/).  Or read it here. (http://thehomeschoolyear.com/book)

I loved that she wrote every day. I loved hearing about her small everyday frustrations, with the recipes & with life. It really inspired me to throw myself into something.

The timing was perfect as we have just decided to homeschool our children as a lifestyle choice and I thought…Cool! A daily blog will be perfect!

There must be other families out there wondering if there’s another way to live? Another way to do ‘family life’?

If you’re here, then hello & welcome aboard! Please feel free to sit back & watch it all unfold. Put the kettle on & check in with us each night to see what went down and how we all got over the line. I’m sure we’ll find our rhythm, right?

Are you a homeschool family? If you’re watching the wheels fall off this thing, I’m open to your emails or comments any time. I would love them! I am very friendly, & I could use the help.

Ok, come hell or high water….I’m in. A daily blog, for 12 months. I’ll be right, here.

Kindly, Lisa x

Can we be friends?!
